Sugary, Starchy Diet May Raise Chances of Lung Cancer

People who eat a sugary, starchy diet may be raising their risk of lung cancer, even if they don't smoke, researchers say.
They found that people who recall eating more foods that have a high glycemic index also were more likely to develop lung cancer. Glycemic index is a term that's familiar to people with diabetes. It describes food that raises blood sugar and stimulates production of insulin — think bagels, white rice and some fruits such as melon and pineapple.

Kids Health, What is Cancer?..

Cancer is a scary word. Almost everyone knows someone who got very sick or died from cancer. Most of the time, cancer affects older people. Not many kids get cancer, but when they do, very often it can be treated and cured.
What Is Cancer?  Cancer is actually a group of many related diseases that all have to do with cells. Cells are the very small units that make up all living things, including the human body. There are billions of cells in each person's body.

Staggering' breast cancer trial kills tumours in 11 days

Women with breast cancer could be spared gruelling rounds of chemotherapy and surgery after trials of a new treatment destroyed deadly tumours in just 11 days.
Experts called the findings "staggering" and said it was the first time a treatment for the disease has shown such a quick response.
They suggested that the results of the trial, in women with one of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer, could revolutionise future treatment of other types of disease.

What is cancer?

Cancer is when abnormal cells divide in an uncontrolled way. Some cancers may eventually spread into other tissues.
There are more than 200 different types of cancer.
1 in 2 people in the UK will get cancer in their lifetime.
Thanks to research many people are cured and more than half live for more than 10 years.

Cancer wiped out in just 11 DAYS through combining drugs as experts hail ''staggering'' breakthrough

Medics said the lightning fast eradication of tumours in the breast is the fastest ever response to a treatment.
Doctors have completely wiped out cancer in patients just 11 days after they were diagnosed. Experts hailed the results of the breakthrough twin attack therapy as "staggering" and "mind boggling".

Are carbs as bad as red meat and cigarettes when it comes to lung cancer?

Carb lovers among us could be at higher risk of developing lung cancer, even if they have never smoked, according to a new study.
But it's not just any carbs. Those with a high glycemic index -- meaning they raise your blood sugar the most -- are the ones associated with increased lung cancer risk. Think white bread, white rice and russet potatoes. In contrast, the carbs in foods such as pasta, oatmeal and sweet potatoes have a low glycemic index.

Breast cancer study finds drug combination that gives 'astonishing' results

Using Herceptin in combination with another drug before surgery shrinks and may even destroy tumours in women with an aggressive form of breast cancer in less than two weeks, an “astonishing” study suggests.
The results of the Cancer Research UK-funded trial, presented at the 10th European Breast Cancer Conference in Amsterdam, could – if successfully replicated – lead to fewer women needing chemotherapy.

6 Early Warning Cancer Symptoms

Cancer is the leading cause of premature death worldwide. It is estimated, however, that thousands of deaths could be avoided each year if cancers were diagnosed early.
Some cancers survival rates increase by over 70% when detected and treated early.
Since there are so many different types of cancer, precise symptoms do vary but there are often telltale signs to detect cancer early enough and drastically improve your chance of survival.
So if you notice a few of the signs in the following pages, tell your doctor.

Laryngeal Cancer

Laryngeal cancer is a type of cancer that affects the larynx - an organ that plays an important role in breathing and communicating. It contains the vocal cords, which give us the sound needed to speak. The larynx is composed of three different parts:
  • Glottis - the part of the larynx that contains the vocal cords
  • Supraglottis - the area above the glottis
  • Subglottis - area below the glottis
Cancer can develop in each of these three areas and are unique from one another. They each produce different symptoms, require different treatment methods, and vary in prognosis.

Lymphoma: What is Lymphoma?

Lymphoma is a type of cancer that affects our lymphatic system. There are main groups of lymphoma: Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. These two groups encompass about 30 different types of lymphoma.
Lymphoma develops in the lymphatic system, part of the immune system that helps filter out bacteria and fight disease. Most of us are familiar with the term lymph nodes, and they can become swollen in normal situations at any time in our lives — usually when we are sick or have an infection. When the cells in the lymph nodes begin to multiply rapidly, become malignant, and the developing condition is lymphoma.

Hodgkin's Disease (Hodgkin's Lymphoma)

Hodgkin's Disease Symptoms. Hodgkin's disease, sometime called Hodgkin's lymphoma symptoms are sometimes vague and mimic that of other illnesses, making it sometimes difficult to diagnose. At times, no symptoms present themselves at the early stages, making early diagnosis difficult, as well.

Cancer in Man's Best Friend As in humans, cancer in dogs is common, but the types differ.

I remember that, once my patient was asleep, I began the operation, removing the entire rectal cancer encased in healthy surrounding tissue, the most likely approach to cure.  Then, I reconnected the two ends of the intestine, allowing my patient to once again move his bowels normally (something which for weeks he had been unable to do).
Like so many with rectal cancer, my patient had begun experiencing cramping and a change in his bowel habits, including pencil-thin stools, often coated in a thin layer of blood.  And the cramping pain.  Pain obviously resulting from a partial blockage of the large intestine.

Bladder Cancer: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Of Urothelial Carcinoma

Bladder cancer is a disease that affects the bladder, an elastic organ that is responsible for storing urine that is released by the kidneys. It is the fifth most common type of cancer in the U.S. and when diagnosed in the early stages, it is highly treatable.
There are several types of bladder cancer, some being more common then others. The most common type of bladder cancer is urothelial carcinoma, accounting for about 90% of bladder cancer cases.

Anal Cancer - What is Anal Cancer? The Causes, Symptoms, Treatment, and Prevention

Anal cancer is cancer that develops in the anus, the opening of the rectum, which allows waste to pass from the large intestine to outside of the body. The anus is often confused with the rectum, which is the last several inches of the lower intestine. The rectum ultimately ends at the anus, where fecal material exits the body.
Like other parts of the body, the anus is susceptible to infections and diseases, such as anal cancer.

Gallbladder Cancer Signs and Symptoms or Lack of Symptoms

What are the signs and symptoms of gallbladder that you should know?  Gallbladder Cancer May Not Have Symptoms or Signs
Unfortunately, from a diagnosis standpoint, gallbladder cancer does not often have symptoms in the early, most curable stages of the disease.  Many of the signs and symptoms of gallbladder cancer occur when the tumor is already in the advanced stages or when it has spread to nearby organs.

Lip Cancer Symptoms What are the signs and symptoms of lip cancer?

Lip cancer symptoms can be nonspecific and similar to that of less serious conditions. As with any disease, early detection is key, so it is important to report any symptoms to your doctor. What is lip cancer? Lip cancer is a type of oral cancer that occurs when malignant cells develop in the lips.
What is Cancer?
Cancer can start any place in the body. It starts when cells grow out of control and crowd out normal cells. This makes it hard for the body to work the way it should and causes problems in the part of the body where the cancer started.

Understanding Gallstones and Gallbladder Disease

Over 20 million Americans have gallbladder disease and about one million new cases of gallbladder disease are diagnosed annually. The symptoms of gallbladder disease can mimic those of other conditions, including heart attack, making an accurate diagnosis extremely important. If you have been diagnosed with gallbladder disease or gallstones, or if you are wondering whether you may have them, here's what you should know.
What Are Gallstones?Gallbladder disease is typically characterized by the presence of gallstones, which form bile stored in the gallbladder hardens. Bile is a liquid that helps the body digest fats. When gallstones form, they can block the normal flow of bile from the liver to the small intestine. Undiagnosed gallstones can cause serious problems if they become trapped in the bile duct.

Brain Tumor Symptoms

Common brain tumor symptoms tend to be non-specific, mimicking other illnesses. Many times, symptoms don't immediately raise red flags that scream "brain tumor" to a physician. Brain tumors are rare, despite their increasing rate of diagnosis and because of this rarity, physicians often don't evaluate patients right off the bat for brain tumors. They may rule out other, less serious conditions initially.
Brain tumor symptoms vary greatly from person to person because of two factors: where the tumor is located and its size. The size of a tumor, however, does not effect severity of symptoms. A very small tumor can cause severe symptoms. It is all relative to what part of the brain is affected.

Colon Cancer Symptoms

Colon cancer does not always present symptoms in the early stages. Colon cancer symptoms usually do not appear until the disease has progressed into an advanced stage. This makes screening highly valuable -- it can detect colon cancer in the early stages, before symptoms begin to appear.
Blood in the Stool
Blood in the stool is a common symptom of colon cancer, but you can't always actually see blood that may be in the stool. Tests like the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) detect blood that may be unseen to the naked eye. It is also associated with less-severe health problems, such as hemorrhoids and anal fissures.

Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms

Pancreatic cancer symptoms often do not appear until the disease is in an advanced stage, thus making early detection difficult. When they do appear, they can be vague and nonspecific, such as stomach pain and weight loss. Additionally, a patient's symptoms will vary depending on the location of the cancer within the pancreas.
What Is the Pancreas?

The pancreas is a gland about 6 inches long that is shaped like a thin pear lying on its side. The wider end of the pancreas is called the head, the middle section is called the body, and the narrow end is called the tail. The pancreas lies behind the stomach and in front of the spine. It cannot be felt during a physical exam and is located behind other organs like the stomach, liver, spleen, gallbladder, and small intestine.

Stomach Cancer Symptoms

Symptoms of stomach cancer range from blood in the stool to abdominal pain. Often, however, stomach cancer does not have symptoms in the early stages, or they can be vague and nonspecific -- such as nausea or weight loss. Also, there is no single symptom that exactly pinpoints stomach cancer; therefore, further evaluation and testing is required for a diagnosis.
Symptoms vary and depend on how advanced the disease and what type of gastric cancer they have. If you are experiencing the symptoms of stomach cancer, please see your doctor. With most diseases, a timely diagnosis leads to a better treatment outcome.

Asbestos and other occupational lung diseases in New Zealand

The legacy of disease from working with and exposure to asbestos in New Zealand is continuing. Exposure is now largely confined to brake repairers, lino removers, demolition workers, carpenters, electrical, plumbing and building maintenance workers, and asbestos removal workers. Worldwide, asbestos exposure still occurs at a high level; and there are a number of lessons than can be learned as a result.
Firstly, there continues to be a general lack of awareness of the effects of inhaling dust at work, regardless of the type of dust. Secondly, too great an emphasis has been put on whether or not dust is a danger to health. Concepts that cement dust is safe and silica dust is unsafe; or blue asbestos is worse than white asbestos, have distracted governments from the real issue of dirty workplace air

Comfrey The ‘Miracle’ Healing Herb/Why Was It Banned?

Just why has Comfrey, Symphytum officinale, become a forgotten herb?  Its value as a healing medicine has been recorded over a long period of time.  It has a long arm of proven efficacy as a healer of burns, a soother of the digestive tract, a strengthener of the teeth,  a healer of broken bones, and is a great tonic for falling hair and brittle nails.  And this is why Comfrey was known as The ‘Miracle’ herb.
Comfrey is high in Silica, which is a healing component.  Another aid to healing in Comfrey is the component Allantoin, which is a cell-proliferant. A cell-proliferant encourages the cells of the body to grow again:  bone growth, skin repair, and hair and nail growth are all affected beneficially by the Allantoin in  Comfrey, as well as its abundant silica.   And Comfrey has Mucilage, a slimy material which helps healing.   This means that Comfrey, with its Allantoin and Silica, and Mucilage, and Vitamins, is truly a ‘Miracle Herb’.   Comfrey can heal just about anything.

Oral cancer

There are several types of oral cancers, but over 90% are squamous cell carcinomas. Worldwide, oral cancer is one of the ten most common sites of cancer. People all over the world are affected but it appears to occur most frequently in developing countries particularly India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. In fact, in some parts of India, oral cancer accounts for more than 50% of all cancer.
Who gets oral cancer and why? Oral cancer usually occurs in people over the age of 40. It is twice as common in men as in women.

Bone cancer more deadly in NZ

Young adults suffering cancerous bone tumours in New Zealand are less likely to survive the disease than their peers overseas, a study has found. University Of Otago students Victoria Utley and Angela Zhang analysed cancer diagnosis and survival rates for young adults between 2000 and 2009.
While the overall incidence of malignant bone tumours was relatively rare, their research showed the disease had the lowest rate of survival five years after diagnosis - only 46 per cent for 15 to 19 year-olds and 31 per cent for those aged 20 to 24.

Hip Arthritis Information About the Diagnosis and Treatment of Hip Arthritis

Hip arthritis is a common condition that causes problems of the ball-and-socket joint at the junction of the pelvis and lower extremity.  When arthritis occurs, the normal joint becomes inflamed and painful.  There are many different types of arthritis than can cause pain in the hip joint.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of hip arthritis. Also called wear-and-tear arthritis or degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis is characterized by progressive wearing away of the cartilage of the joint. As the protective cartilage is worn away by hip arthritis, bare bone is exposed within the joint.

Bone Cancer Symptoms and Signs

Bone cancer is a malignant condition that can affect both children and adults. The term "bone cancer" encompasses several different types of the disease, therefore bone cancer symptoms can vary.
As a whole, bone cancer is categorized based on whether the cancer originated in the bone (primary) or whether it spread from another location to the bone (secondary). Secondary bone cancer, or cancer that has spread to the bone from another part of the body, is much more common than primary bone cancer.
